A VALE FOR ALL SEASONS DEPT.

The morning after our last storm, I Viewed one of the most beautiful and hypnotic natural sights I’ve ever seen: the cloud shadows caressing Mendenhall Ridge and San Gabriel Fault, in Little Tujunga Canyon. These are the mountains and canyons of the north rim of the Valley, in View from Valley Village, so I love them. I made a video to share my awe at the mysterious powers that uplift this land. For some reason, Google wasn’t sharing the link properly. If you missed it, and you oughtn’t, here it is again. Honey-voiced Mary Martin will explain my sentiments further…

Lute Song is a 1946 American musical with a book by Sidney Howard and Will Irwin, music by Raymond Scott, and lyrics byBernard Hanighen. It is based on the 14th-century Chinese play Tale of the Pipa by Goo Ming. Though not a great success, the show is significant for Mary Martin’s meeting of then-unknown cast member Yul Brynner, whom she later recommended to her friends Rodgers and Hammerstein for the role of the Siamese monarch in the classic The King and I (1951). It was also the only Broadway appearance of future U.S. First Lady Nancy Reagan.

Today’s cloud show was so spectacular I made a movie, with Mary Martin weaving a magic binding spell with her unforgettable: ‘Mountain High, Valley Low.’ Vale For All Seasons’ Greetings from the View! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1V8dU7tqrU_UIwjxflY6SpkYzi_82jX7O/view?usp=sharing

Just last week I was fretting about the parched sands in the foothills; then yesterday our first big winter rain arrived. It whitened the peaks, cleared the air, and delighted the chaparrall. Beauty and good feeling result! View Little Tujunga Canyon:

The fresh air and the clouds were so sweet — one wrapped itself in a funnel, and puff! — blew me a smoke-ring kiss, like Santa. One momentary curl of condensation refracted an amazing spotlight, conveniently pointing exactly to Valley Village!
