The Valley Village View salutes American Retail, which against all odds carved its very own three-day holiday weekend out of Thanksgiving, while the rest of us were happily carving the turkey. But no sooner had the sales become annual events, featuring chaos, rioting, tramplings, gunshots and fights over merchandise, than the holiday, along with brick-and-mortar retail itself, slumped into inexorable decline. Black Friday at the Mall is not what it was, but the downtown shopping district Black Friday helped to kill (Van Nuys, San Fernando, etc.) has slid even further behind into ugly, grim, almost obscenely hilarious absurdity. That’s where I like to shop.
